Our assessment process is tailored according to your presenting concerns, specific questions from your referrer (e.g., Paediatrician), and your child’s age/developmental level.
The assessment will include an interview with relevant family members/carers, consultation with your child’s teacher (through questionnaire and phone/email), and observation, interview, and assessment with the child. Parents are usually not in the room during standardised testing.
Process

Clinician Assessment Process

Below is an overview of our detailed assessment process:
Developmental History
We start by understanding your child’s developmental milestones, medical history, and psychosocial background, and we’ll discuss your current concerns and goals for the assessment.
Assessment Testing (2-4 sessions with child): Our assessments are highly individualised and based upon information gathered in the developmental history. Your child will only be given assessments that they require. The sessions include engaging, child-friendly tasks tailored to measure cognitive, behavioural, and emotional strengths and challenges. This is also an opportunity to provide positive feedback to your child in a confidence-building and empowering manner. We dedicate substantial time to gathering and synthesising information from schools, caregivers, and other professionals to create a thorough and individualised understanding of each child.
Questionnaire Administration, Scoring & Analysis
We use validated tools and data to ensure a holistic understanding of your child’s profile. Beyond diagnosis, our evaluations are designed to deliver evidence-based strategies that are practical and tailored to each child’s needs.
Report Writing
We prepare detailed reports with actionable strategies for home, school, and therapeutic settings. We provide a report for your referrer and an additional Learner Profile report for the school with tailored information most relevant to educational settings.
Teacher/Allied Health Consultations (pre- and post-assessment)
The clinician will gather valuable context from your child’s teacher or clinicians to inform recommendations. They will also discuss outcomes and implementation strategies to support your child’s learning (optional).
Feedback Session
These are collaborative sessions with parents to discuss findings, insights, and personalised recommendations. Any applicable diagnoses will be discussed in a collaborative and supportive manner, focusing on providing an understanding of your child and their needs.
We also offer a feedback session for children and adolescents who have had their assessment conducted at CANGROUP. In this appointment, we help the young person better understand how their brain works. In an age-appropriate, supportive manner, this session involves discussions about their strengths and challenges, and when appropriate, any diagnoses, helping them to understand what this means for them in everyday life. We also explore practical support strategies to help them navigate everyday experiences. For a deeper, more comprehensive approach, this type of work can also be undertaken through a block of intervention sessions with the young person, where tailored ongoing support helps them to understand what being neurodivergent means to them.
Follow-up session/s for parents
Neuropsychological assessments at CANGroup include a comprehensive feedback session where assessment findings are discussed with a child’s caregivers. However, for some families, a single feedback session may not be sufficient. In these situations, we offer follow-up sessions for caregivers, which are tailored to each family’s needs. The sessions can support parents to more fully understand their child’s profile, explore specific challenges in greater depth, and/or collaboratively consider priorities for intervention and support planning.
